- Rick Brown "RiverMan" is an Ojibwe artist from Rainy River First Nations at Lake of the Woods Ontario. "RiverMan" is derived from his Ojibwe birth name Ziibi-Inini. In English translation meaning "A Man of the River". Rick was the first sibling of 11 children to be born indoors in a tiny 2 room house on the reservation that is no longer standing. His other siblings were born on the lakes as Ricks Dad and Mom were hunters and trappers in Lake of the Woods and traveled by canoe setting up wigwams as shelter. When RiverMans mom was ready to deliver his Dad would pull over to an Island where she would give birth. When RiverMan was 6 years old he was part of what is now known as the Sixties Scoop. RiverMan and his siblings were taken from his Mother and placed in residential schools and orphanages. RiverMan lost his Ojibwe language shortly thereafter. At 15 years old RiverMan ran away and traveled on foot 300 miles in search of his Mother. He eventually found her and they had some time together until her death a few years later. RiverMan is a successful artist with his work represented in galleries. He is also a skilled carpenter having framed many homes in his lifetime.
